Music note

Just a little something to relive my Wednesday night in Montreal. I went to see Nero at Metropolis and it made me dance a lot! The set-up on stage was unreal, had to see it to believe it!

Here’s a classic. I love the Aaron Carter version, too, of course. Sometimes my boyfriend sings it to me. He’s rather cute.

Girl Power

I don’t see too many female dj’s hitting the scene but this past Friday it was good to see DUBSMACK featuring a female. And one badass female at that. Instant girl crush. And I guarantee she’ll make you dance.

I almost didn’t make it out to see Vilify, but somehow I found myself sweating up a storm at Ritual. AND I was glad.

People, be prepared. This summer is going to be ridiculous. Borgore is coming up and the place is going to be packed. No one is going to want to wear clothes in there. It’s like a forest fire!

So while you’re warming up, if you missed Vilify then check this video. Although it really won’t compare to the real thing…

Sunny

I was just sitting on my porch, reading a book, drinking coffee.

It’s warm! And it makes me happy!

I’ve had a pretty good long weekend so far. Even though I didn’t go home for Easter, the roomies and I still decided to make a good dinner for ourselves. Ham, potatoes, yams and salad. Oh, and it had been awhile but I decided that blueberry cobbler was a must. Dessert hadn’t been on my mind in awhile. But it was very much needed.

I’ve been spending a lot of time at Ritual but it has been well worth it. For example, my Thursday night allowed me to discover this guy from Toronto…84.85. Girls were actually onstage doing ridiculous things which made me laugh. When he poured beer on himself, one girl actually proceeded to lick his face.

I mean, he’s got solid beats, but I didn’t have the same urges as other females in the room. I downloaded the album the next day because I had found myself a different kind of love for him.

I’m sure after a few spins you’ll feel a similar kind of love. His set was short but so is his EP. But so full of awesome.

And even more awesome beats on Friday with Bar9. Have you ever seen this dude? He’s crazy cool.

Needless to say, my world was rocked. If you weren’t there I kind of feel bad for you. Love at first DROP.

What’s next? AUTOEROTIQUE

And to all of those who saw Rusko in T.O lastnight, or will be seeing him tonight in Montreal…I am jealous.

This is the last night I have to get a bit crazy before pounding the pavement for a job this week. Wish me luck? Until then…Mod night. My Monday morning class at 8:30 held me back for far too long. So I guess it’s time to get back in the game, after all, Sunday’s are best served with gin and tonics. Am I right?

Summer summer summer!

It’s approaching. I can feel it, so of course I’m getting sick of writing papers.

It’s past 11 and my final paper is due tomorrow at 5 o’clock. And you guessed it, it’s not done. It’s the last thing on my brain, I’m just considering what I will get up to this summer.

Obviously I’ve recently acquired a passion for the pornography industry. Throughout the last few months I’ve been doing a lot of research interviewing porn stars, feminists, and scholars. I actually was trying to get an interview with one of my favourite people in the porn industry – Sasha Grey – unfortunately her book tour has swept her away to all edges of the planet! However, I did manage to have a great telephone conversation with the great Annie Sprinkle! A Legend, really. She was in Ottawa at the end of March for a presentation at Ottawa U. While essays held me back from attending, she’s amazing and I regret not being able to go! Hopefully she comes back.

One thing I recommend you watch if you’re as interested in porn as me…9 to 5 days in porn! It’s a pretty awesome documentary, very educational, you could say.

CHECK IT BY CLICKING IT!

Hopefully I can learn more about the industry, maybe write some more interesting pieces!

A new project for me this summer…I’ll be writing sex posts for FASHGASM, my roomie’s awesome fashion blog. She decided she needed to add a little something into the mix, and, well, fashgasm is half orgasm so why not make it SEX?

In the meantime, I’ll be working this new job of mine, trying to find time for studying, and making time for the crazy shenanigans that will be going down at RITUAL this summer. 2011, you will be the best yet. I hope the crowds are HUGE because I know getting up early for work or summer school (ugh) shouldn’t deter from the goooood times!

Speaking of, tomorrow:

It’s crunch time folks so you better get that studying done and those papers written.

This is all I want

CIAO

This is unhealthy

The amount of school work. It weighs a ton.

I keep on reading and writing and phoning and editing, then the cycle starts over again. And to top it all off, I just got a job. So now I have 16 hours less a week to put towards essays/assignments. Hopefully I can pull this off.

I’m just trying to make it to April 6th. That day will be glorious. I know it will…

Anyway, I guess it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Now is the time, even if I should be doing homework. But it’s finally spring and there is snow on the ground. Clearly the world is upside down as of late, so I can break or bend the rules as I see fit…for the moment, anyway.

I would say that about one month ago my life was much better, much easier.

I took my sister to her very first dubstep show and now she’s in love. I also took her to see Bare Noize this month. It was pretty killer. I had an amazing night, except for the part where some dude tried to mug us. Luckily, we escaped unscathed!

Just a taste I found on youtube. I distinctly remember when they played this song too. The crowd was crazy! My nights out at ritual are always the best nights. Can’t help but be happy when you feel the music alllll over!

Now I’m just waiting for the snow to melt before my birthday on Saturday! I actually had a large portion of my dress collection out yesterday, and it really brought me into a springy mood! But of course within 12 hours its snowing. Just a little bit longer and I can take half my closet out of hiding!

And what does spring mean? Summer! And what does summer mean?

BORGORE! Yep, I know. I managed to keep my lips sealed very tightly, but the show announcement came out today. Good thing too, I was bursting at the seams. I missed him in Toronto last year so I absolutely will be attending. It’s gonna be a crazy night, too. June 12th, try to remember that.

I know I’m getting really excited really soon, but with so much stuff to worry about, it’s good to have things to look forward to! April will be amazing…well, if I am not struggling to finish my essays. We’ll see how that goes!

Til then, just listen to Die Antwoord

Where did January go?

I’m back after a brief hiatus. Sorry, folks, but journalism calls.

While I’m here I’ll update you on some cool things you may also be checking out in the next couple of weeks. If not, then you should consider doing so!

Ajapai is coming to Ottawa this Friday! Tickets are pretty cheap so scoop them while you can! If you’ve never heard of him, he’s a dubstep artist from Japan. As you know, I’m a mega-fan of dubstep, so as soon as I heard “Japan” and “dubstep” I immediately began to feel my mouth water. He’s at ritual nightclub and I strongly encourage you to go!

And on my dear little sister’s birthday [February 11th], it also happens to be DUBSMACK. I may have to bring her to her very first night out at ritual to experience some solid beats.

Rainman will be there, of course. Every time I see him, it only gets better.

Mt. Eden will be the feature that night, coming all the way from New Zealand. Ottawa is really stepping up the game in the dubstep scene. I’ve been to some amazing shows just a bus ride away from my house!

I find Mt. Eden to be pretty chill, definitely excited to see what kind of show they’re gonna bring us here.

My next hope is that Skrillex will make his way back to Ottawa. I hope we showed him a good enough time to make him want to come back again!

And THAT is my dubstep dose.

Some things you need

The year is coming to a close soon enough. And since my wisdom teeth will be pulled in the coming days I thought I should do some coherent blogging before the year is up. Basically, things I loved about 2010…and things you need, of course.

Since studying must commence I guess this is just part one of a series of things to come. How exciting.

This one’s obvious.

Practically invisible but look a little closer and listen a little closer. Teen Dream captured my heart for some reason. Something about it makes me smile and frown simultaneously. It’s like a look back to the person you were maybe 3 years ago. So it’s not that far off but in a way it still sort of feels like it is. Strange.

More of this, please. Best Coast kind of reminds me of Girls. This is a good thing. Old school feel is always welcome.

I don’t even need to get into the details here. At all. Just pure awesome.

You’ve probably heard this album without even realizing you were hearing it. Just saying.

How could I NOT? I’ve heard mixed thoughts but I enjoy it, even though I really have only given it a few spins. Not too much heavy listening to this because there was so much pouring out of my itunes this year. I’m still trying to sort through all the precious metal. Or vinyl. Or whatever.

Texico Bitches is catchy as hell though.

Yes, please, Caribou. I adore you.

Because you know it’s good. Come on.

Absolutely necessary. I mean completely and utterly. really. Maybe I’m biased though.

I remember listening to Halcyon Digest for the first time. I was stepping out of my front door when it struck me that I had the album on my iPod with the most sincere intention of listening to it but hadn’t. So I thought this journey to school would be a good time to listen. Well I listened to it on my journey to school, my journey home, little trips between where I could sneak buds into my ears. Ignoring the traffic around me. Just pumping this album into my brain non stop for a week. I actually didn’t listen to ANYTHING other than this album for seven days straight. Need I say more? Get this. Now.

Had me at hello.

This is just me warming up. Study break, END.

12TH PLANET

Even though the downstairs portion of RITUAL is small we still showed 12th Planet that we know how to have a damn good time!

Here in Ottawa, we don’t mess around. If you weren’t there you missed some pretty ugly Christmas sweaters and some pretty filthy dubstep. AWESOME NIGHT! Hopefully he’ll hit us up again.

And he even gave us a little taste of last week once again, kinda like this…

Now I’m wayyyyy too pumped for February. Skrillex & Nero. See you there?

-M

Better late then never

I know I missed the official 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death on here, but it doesn’t mean I wasn’t thinking about it. Because I was. thirty years is a long time…

“Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans…”

This week was the end of classes. While most are probably not too excited about exams, I have to admit, I only have one. Next Friday. So this leaves me a lot of time to slack and do other things. It’s great. I apologize to those of you studying your asses off, though…suckers…

Well I will share some things with you. I didn’t realize that there was a music video for Don’t Haunt this Place by The Rural Alberta Advantage, but there is! And it’s stop motion, which I am a fan of. Hopefully you are too! Apparently I’m a bit behind on the music video side of things. I rarely watch them, and I rarely enjoy any, to be honest.

But this is different. Listening to the lyrics it’s pretty obvious this is a song about breaking up, love and so on and so forth. BUT for those of you expecting a heterosexual romance, I tell you, it is not. And I think that’s the most beautiful part.

And as for your weekly dose of dubstep…this weekend at RITUAL you can catch 12th Planet with Rainman and Numbchuck. I’ve been looking forward to this all week.

It was sad when Skrillex left the stage last Thursday. I was ready to dance all night. The crowd was pretty amazing, and pretty sweaty, too. People fell, people danced, people yelled. It was all fun. But the heat was intense. If you didn’t get yourself some water you were bound to check out. It might have been cold out but it felt pretty refreshing. It was necessary to go outside every so often, no matter how much you were loving the show.

Good news for myself and other Skrillex fans, he’ll be making his way to Toronto this February. I’ll be there. Will you?

I’ll leave you with something tempting. Maybe you’ll even feel the need to hit up Ritual tomorrow. Your speakers aren’t doing it justice…
