To your heart’s content

I just can’t keep it to myself. It would be CRUEL. To both you, myself, and Ruby Coast.

I was excited when I saw the link to download their new album Whatever This is. I still remember being downtown in a tiny bookstore in Sarnia. My friends were playing some music so I decided to go. And that is when they hit my ears. It was superb, and they gave my friend and I a cd with maybe five songs on it. We must have listened to it 400 times that summer.

Now I’ve seen these boys both here in Ottawa, and sometimes when I hit up my hometown they happen to be there. At their last show I purchased a bracelet, which I get plenty of compliments on.

Good sounds ahead. Pinky Swear.

Anything Sufjan Stevens gets my blood pumping. So of course his interview with Pitchfork attracted all of my attention.

Click on Sufjan’s face if you care to read it. [Of course you want to read it]…

I recently found myself looking at records on Bank Street, I think I’ve said this before but I will say it again. Essential vinyl = WARPAINT. It’s on the top of my list. After groceries. Unfortunately, I can’t survive on record sleeves and crisp sounds. Too bad, though.

I’ve been repping The Fool pretty hard but I also managed to find an EP Exquisite Corpse that includes this lovely track…

Now, I was on quite a hunt last month for some track and new artists. My friend turned me onto something I had never heard of, but I sensed potential [he has really good taste]. How had I never listened to Kids & Explosions before? So I decided to check out Shit Computer and I was pretty satisfied with the beats I heard.

If you like what you hear and you want some more, you can get the album here.

And you probably know this is coming. My obsession is neverending. Yes, Toro Y Moi. February 22nd is getting closer…and you know what this means? Underneath The Pine can finally be yours.

Until then, you can watch Chaz Bundick dance and stuff in the Still Sound video. Yep, he’s still got it.

Even though I hate to do it, I have some serious research to do. CRTC, Usage Based Billing and all that fun stuff. You should actually care though, especially if you live in Canada. Internet metering won’t make you happy, nor your bank account. If you are a streamer of television shows and like to download music and the like, well…that might just have to change.

You can read about it on Open Media, and here.

There is going to be a rally at Parliament on February 12th, you’ll probably find me there with my microphone. There’s more info on the Facebook Group.

Where did January go?

I’m back after a brief hiatus. Sorry, folks, but journalism calls.

While I’m here I’ll update you on some cool things you may also be checking out in the next couple of weeks. If not, then you should consider doing so!

Ajapai is coming to Ottawa this Friday! Tickets are pretty cheap so scoop them while you can! If you’ve never heard of him, he’s a dubstep artist from Japan. As you know, I’m a mega-fan of dubstep, so as soon as I heard “Japan” and “dubstep” I immediately began to feel my mouth water. He’s at ritual nightclub and I strongly encourage you to go!

And on my dear little sister’s birthday [February 11th], it also happens to be DUBSMACK. I may have to bring her to her very first night out at ritual to experience some solid beats.

Rainman will be there, of course. Every time I see him, it only gets better.

Mt. Eden will be the feature that night, coming all the way from New Zealand. Ottawa is really stepping up the game in the dubstep scene. I’ve been to some amazing shows just a bus ride away from my house!

I find Mt. Eden to be pretty chill, definitely excited to see what kind of show they’re gonna bring us here.

My next hope is that Skrillex will make his way back to Ottawa. I hope we showed him a good enough time to make him want to come back again!

And THAT is my dubstep dose.

New year, new year!

Happy new year! I may have had my wisdom teeth removed but this didn’t stop me from enjoying my holiday! Now that it’s over I’m a bit sad…back to being a journalism student. It was bound to happen.

So I’ll continue with some things you need…the bare essentials. The things that if you don’t have…well, I feel awful for your lack of!

You love girls, right?

I mean the band, silly. So you can start drooling while listening to Broken Dreams Club.

A little band I saw open for Grizzly Bear a couple of years back has gotten a bit more recognition in the last little while. And this I am happy for, they deserve it. See for yourself and give Pigeons a chance.

I know for a fact I have raved about Horse Feathers on here a few times in the past. They put on a heart wrenching live show, and after Thistled Spring was released I urged you to listen. If you didn’t the first time around, here I give you a second chance.

I am now about to admit that yes, Kanye made a good album. There you have it. I did it. BUT the rating it got still blows me away…that is all. Just listen to it and decide for yourself though…

One of my personal favourites this year was Mines, but my undying love for Menomena may have swung me a little.

Still, there is no reason why you wouldn’t start with the track “Queen Black Acid” and not want to continue through to the end.

It was pretty much one year ago exactly when I first heard the once known as Final Fantasy‘s album, Heartland. Pure beauty. Can Owen Pallett make anything that isn’t beautiful? I actually saw him perform on Canada Day for free. It was excellent!

I loved Pride, so it’s no surprise that Phosphorescent made me fall in love all over again.

The journey of life must continue now, but I promise you, things you need is absolutely not over yet.
