Gypsy Punks!

So what do young single gals in Ottawa do on a Wednesday night? Well that’s a silly question…obviously we have gypsy caravan parties! And with the release of Gogol Bordello’s newest album,Transcontinental Hustle, the timing couldn’t be more perfect!

So get out your most gyspy-esque costume and celebrate!  and don’t be afraid to add a little punk flare.

Time to go put together my outfit…

Me being uber-pumped for bluesfest pt. one

I know what you’re thinking. It’s April. Bluesfest is in July.

But I really am looking forward to it. I currently have all my tickets sitting right in front of me. They are beautiful.

So why am I excited? First of all have you seen the line up? Why aren’t you excited?? [if you’re not already, like myself]

My plans for this summer included Osheaga, and yes, while I would still love to go, work and saving of money compel me not to. And Bluesfest also helped me feel better about most likely missing it. That is…if I do miss it. It’s really all a balancing act.

One of the acts that made me very excited = Bear in Heaven

Very much enjoyable, and I’ve only heard good things about their live performances. So it should be amazing. Basically, July 10th is going to be a day you won’t want to miss:

Basia Bulat @ 1:45 pm

That’s the Spirit @ 5:00 pm

Bear in Heaven @ 5:45 pm

Metric @ 7:00 pm

Passion Pit @ 8:30 pm

The Flaming Lips @ 9:30 pm

I think I may have to ditch some over others, but I will survive. If you were wondering what I would choose as the top to see…..I’d say Bear in Heaven & The Flaming Lips. Fingers crossed that Yeasayer gets thrown in the mix in the near future, seeing as bands have yet to be announced!

Well, enough distractions. I must continue packaging my life so it is fit to travel to Centretown!

More of me being overcome with excitement to come – guaranteed.

New stuff

The xx have been such a sensation the past year you might even be bored of them already. The nonchalant voices, the sexy beats, they can get tiring, right? Either way, I can still thoroughly enjoy the album in its entirety. The trick is not to wear it out. Oh, and don’t listen to it with a boyfriend/girlfriend. That could ruin it due to the sexiness if the relationship ends. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I’m not going to lie, islands is probably one of the best tracks on their album. And now there is a video that involves odd choreography, people wearing black, kissing, and fire. What’s not to love? Oddly enough, I find the backdrop to look like a Louis Vuitton bag, but instead of the classic LV, we see x’s.

I’m a big Horse Feathers fan, and Words are Dead is something else. Justin Ringle’s voice blows my mind, and I’m pretty impressed with their newest album Thistled Spring. If it takes you a few rounds I understand. But they had me at hello.

And there is snow on the ground in Ottawa today. Can you believe it? I can’t…mainly because I was in shorts and sandals just a few short days ago. Mother nature seems to be in tune with my mood, but I wish it wasn’t this way.

Plans for the end of a soggy, and rather depressing April

You can end the month with a bang, but I’d hate to sound cliché. Truth is, there might be a bit of a whimper, but I’m sure May can only get better. April 30th will bring Timber Timbre to Ottawa. While I would love to go, packing and moving furniture beckons me, so if the rest of you could just enjoy it without me, it’s quite alright. Hopefully the show is just as good at Toronto Island and BluesFest.

For the next few days I will be shoving my life into suitcases and boxes, and slowly unpacking them when I arrive at the new place. This weekend will include: good food, good fun, and family comfort. All three I could really use right about now. Well, I guess I’ve been getting the good fun down pat lately.

I recently bought my Bluesfest pass. A solid investment for the month of July! Only 250 bones, but the prices will soar, and HST will kick you in the ass. I know I got impatient but the line-up is not only thoroughly impressive, but also incomplete! So there could be more surprises to come!

Unfortunately, this means missing my hometown’s Bayfest for a second year in a row. The bands are similar, but it’s totally different when you can walk on down from your mom’s house to the water, and not have to worry about being capable to ride that bicycle home. Four blocks is just too easy…

When this month ends, I’ll be happy. It will be bittersweet, but it will be good. I’m already excited to have more time to go to the mayfair, even though I’ll be working full time and going home for a little over a week. Must-see movies this month = Chloe, A Single Man, The Coca Cola Case, Cape Fear, Casino, Taxi Driver, Raging bull, Birdemic (!) and most likely Back to The future. It’s definitely [and obviously] a Scorsese month, and I have been thinking that Shutter Island should be added to my list. It’s really growing. I’ve already had to eliminate the double feature on May fourth [Mean Streets and Good Fellas] but for VERY reasonable circumstances. ie: Toro y moi & Caribou.

I think the packing/unpacking of my life will be the worst to come. That and surviving another couple weeks without my hairdresser…what? I am picky and I miss her.

Jamz

If you need some new jamz I can give you some suggestions. But the number one that I can’t get enough of lately would have to be Toro Y Moi, the solo project of Chaz Bundick from The Heist and the Accomplice. If you find yourself in Ottawa on May fourth, then I strongly suggest you hit up babylon to catch a show with, one of my personal faves, Caribou.Tickets may or may not be sold out, but if it’s anything like Fridays show with Plants and Animals, then I’d say you’d better get your grubby hands on some tickets ASAP!

Check it, dig it, enjoy it – – – http://www.myspace.com/toroymoi

And while you’re at it, if you haven’t (dare I say it) listened to Caribou, give Andorra a spin.

Hopefully my life will be piecing itself back together after a move to centretown. Either way I’ve got three tickets in my pocket, and nothing can keep me away. If you see the wildly dancing red-head with a spunky brunette, you know who it is.

Shocking and good

If you haven’t seen M.I.A’s new video for “Born Free” then you should. But not while eating, or if you have a weak stomach. But if you can handle blood and guts then by all means, go for it.

Youtube has deleted the mini-movie already but it can be found here —> http://www.miauk.com/

It’s about nine minutes, and if you’re too afraid to watch it, then I completely understand. It’s basically U.S troops (uh-oh) rounding up a minority group. In this case, red-headed boys. They are taken to a desert, and, well, killed. But it’s not just violent, it has a point about genocide and war, and quite obviously, the U.S.A. While you can laugh at the whole red-head thing (I’m a red head myself, so I’ve heard it already) the video makes a statement. Red heads aren’t the usual victims of war and genocide, however, other minorities, while not specifically pointing any out, are.

Basically, it’s awesome. And so is M.I.A. That’s my opinion anyway.

Enjoy the video, if you dare.

It’s been long enough

My last several blogs have failed miserably, so I figure now, with summer beginning and many new adventures ahead, along with two years of University behind, I should start.

So here it is. Here I am. My life is always on.
